We’re the roadside assistance crew in Razlog, next door to Bansko — every winter we pull dozens of visitors’ cars out of the snow. Here’s what we wish every driver knew before heading up.
From Sofia most drivers take the E79 south and then cross the Predela pass (1140 m) between Simitli and Razlog. Predela is ploughed regularly but gets snow, fog and the occasional stuck lorry — allow extra time in a storm. The alternative through Velingrad and the Yundola pass is prettier and quieter, but higher and slower in deep winter.
The last stretch — Razlog to Bansko — is flat and easy. The tricky part is inside the resort: narrow streets and packed snow in hotel car parks. If your accommodation is uphill, park lower and walk the last bit after fresh snowfall.
